Signature Funeral Alternatives — alkaline hydrolysis facility
Prince George's County
Description
Whitaker wants to convert an existing ~8,800 sq ft former auto-repair building in the I-E zone into a water cremation facility with three resomation units processing up to six decedents a day, 8 a.m.–4 p.m., no funerals, viewings, or embalming on site. M-NCPPC staff recommends approval with about twelve conditions.
Impact summary
Supporters say it's a quiet, emissions-free use generating minimal traffic and wastewater (200–300 gallons per body, treated and discharged via WSSC). Opponents say any death-care facility is incompatible near residential communities and would further depress a corridor they want revitalized with retail and medical uses.
